Fair Trade Education Activities 2024/25

With a view to enhancing students’ understanding of Fair Trade, we organize various educational activities including themetic talks, exhibition, experiential activities and workshops. Students are able to explore Fair Trade through immersive, interactive and innovative learning experience, provoke thinking in viral topics such as globalization, sustainable development, gender equality and corporate social responsibilities. All activities are open for registration throughout the year.

Thematic Talks

The concept of Fair Trade is a major issue in the mainstream curriculum. In line with the school curriculum, we provide informative and interactive in-school talks, with a variety of perspectives on the topic, so that students can relate their daily lives to their textbook knowledge.

 

Duration: 45 minutes - 1 hour

(1) Globalization and Fair Trade

The talk will serve as an introduction of Fair Trade and its importance, and will also address how the livelihood of farmers are affected by multi-national corporations under globalization and how Fair Trade helps improve their quality of life.

 

Maximum participants: 200 pax

 

 

 

 

 


(2) What am I wearing?

 

From 4 seasons, to 52 seasons a year, fast fashion has been influencing the the production cycle of fashion industry rapidly. Meanwhile, the clothes are often made of raw materials which adopts the controversial Genetic Modification (GM) technology. After the workshop, students will have an in-depth understanding of the hardships of cotton farmers and garment workers, and how Fair Trade empowers the producers.

(3) Fair Trade and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)  

 

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of universal indicators towards a sustainable future, and the concept of Fair Trade fits into the 12 of these goals. The seminar will illustrate how Fairtrade contribute to the world’s progress. Students' activities are as follows: 

  • To learn about the relationship between the six principles of Fair Trade and the goal of sustainable development.
  • To recognise the Fair Trade concepts and reflect on their own responsibility as consumers.

WorkshopGo Top

We offer workshops on different themes, incorporating the concept of Fair Trade, where students can learn to upcycle various Fair Trade products and understand the process of Fair Trade operation and sustainable development goals.

(1) Zero Waste. Coffee grounds upcycling workshopSelf Photos / Files - 教育活動_工作坊_11

 

What to do with the coffee grounds after enjoying a cup of coffee? Through the workshop, we will use coffee grounds to make daily necessities and explain the injustices of the coffee trade. Students' activities are as follows: 

 

  • Upcycling coffee grounds to make everyday items such as coffee grounds scrubs, tie-dye, mosquito coil, soap, etc (choose either one).
  • Recognising the relationship between fairtrade and sustainable development goals. 

 

Maximum participants: 90 pax

 

 


(2) Fair Trade Chocolate Blind Tasting Workshop

From the bitter cocoa beans to the chocolates, the production of chocolate hides the painful tears of farmers and child labour. In the workshop, students will be able to taste Fair Trade chocolates and get to know the values behind. Students' activities are as follows: 

 

  • Tasting chocolates from different brands to identify the Fair Trade chocolate.From the activity, learn about the story and philosophy of the Fair Trade brand.
  • To explore international issues such as illegal child labour and bringing out how fairtrade can tackle these problems.

 

Maximum participants: 90 pax

 

 


(3) Natural Pigments Making Workshop

 

To explore the colours from nature, the workshop takes students on a journey of discovering 'colour' in everyday life, to create and paint with the colours. Students’ activities are as follows: 

 

  • Making own paints from materials such as dried flowers, turmeric and coffee grounds.
  • To learn about the production of raw materials, hence, develop awareness in producer rights issues and SDGs.

 

Maximum participants: 30 pax

 


(4) Banana Yarn Bracelet Workshop

 

Banana peels are not only reusable, they can also be made into "banana yarn"! Through the workshop, students will be able to make their own bracelets using banana yarn. Students' activities are as follows: 

 

  • To braid bracelets using Fair Trade certified banana yarn and learn about the story of banana production. 
  • To introduce the Fair Trade concepts and encourage students to consume sustainably in their daily lives.

 

Maximum participants: 30 pax

 

 


(5) Tea Leaves Recycle Paper Workshop

 

Tea is one of the most consumed beverages. Through the workshop, students will be able to choose their favourite tea flavour and create a unique recycled paper. Students’ activities are as follows: 

 

  • Understanding the production of tea and the relationship between Fair Trade and SDGs. 
  • To make a piece of recycled paper and learn about the concept of sustainable consumption.

 

Maximum participants: 30 pax


6. Painted Decoupage Leaves Workshop

 

Decoupage, which means to cut out beautiful shapes and use them for any kind of decoration. The workshop allows students to give a second life to fallen leaves by collaging, cutting and painting them to create unique works of art. Content includes:

 

  • Selecting favorite leaves and cutting them into different shapes;
  • Giving leaves a new meaning and deepening the understanding of waste utilization.

Simulation GamesGo Top

A. Simulation Games

 

Learning through play has always been advocated in the education sector. Engaging in our simulation game, students learn from the perspective of different stakeholders. At the game, students could develop team spirit and learn about concepts such as no forced labour and fair pay.

 

Time: 1.5-2 hours

 

Related subjects: Civic and Social Development, Geography, Design and Applied Technology, Economics, etc.

 

Maximum participants: 120 pax

Through a role play session as small-scale orange farmers, students will experience the dilemma faced by farmers in developing countries and find out why they often fall prey to hunger. Post activity reflection will facilitate students’ understanding of Fair Trade and how Fair Trade cooperatives empower small-scale farmers.

Role playing as smartphone factory workers, participants will experience the grueling environment and long working hours that workers are enduring every day. Post activity reflection will strengthen students’ understanding of Fair Trade and the rights entitled to producers.

Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours

 

Maximum participants: 100 pax

 


(3) Fair Banquet

 

Students are randomly assigned a role and experience a game based on sweatshops and climate justice, understanding the injustices experienced during production and the reasons why climate change affects producers at the lower levels of the production chain more deeply. Contents include:

 

Grouped as either non-fair traders or fair traders, they earn points for food from different game scenarios, with the highest scoring player having first choice of food.

The importance of fair trade and sustainability is brought out through the unequal distribution of food.

 

Maximum partcipants: 60-100 pax

 


(4) Chocolate Conference

 

From a row of chocolate bars of $10, how much does each stakeholder share? In the game, students will negotiate and trade in different roles in a simulated conference to express their views on what they consider to be a Fair Trade. Students’ activities are as follows: 

 

  • Stimulating students' logic and thinking skills as they argue for the best interests of the group in an opaque market price.
  • Realising the importance of fair price and the concept of Fair Trade.

 

Maximum partcipants: 30-100 pax


(5) Trade Simulation Game

 

Globalisation has led to an increase in trades among countries. In this game, students take on the role of different countries, such as developing countries and developed countries. Students’ activities are as follows: 

 

  • Understanding the problems behind economic globalisation and experiencing the injustice situation.
  • To learn about the concept of Fair Trade and how a Fair Trade economy works.

 

Maximum partcipants: 30-100 pax


B. Experiental Activities

 

We hope to bring the concept of Fair Trade to students in a fun and easy way. Experiential activities will help them to build empathy and connect knowledge with their lives and put it into practice in their daily lives.

(1) Fair Trade Lunch Gathering

 

A fun and easy “eat and learn” lunch gathering where students can taste lunch cooked with Fairtrade food and learn about the stories behind the production of the food, including:

 

  • Learn about the origins of the food and how the market treats workers unfairly;
  • Learn about Fair Trade food and how Fair Trade helps to improve the lives of farmers and workers.

 

Flexible meal arrangements: full lunch or dessert.

 

Duration: 1.5 - 2 hours

Maximum partcipants: 50 pax

 

(2) One-day Local Nature Tours

 

“Running out of the classroom” is a relaxing and fun way for students to learn about the process of farming and food production. By visiting local farms and gardens, students can

 

  • Experience the process of farming;
  • Understand the realities of the hard work of small farmers, e.g. facing weather problems, markets for local crops, etc.;
  • Reflect on the relationship between Fair Trade and the local community.

 

Kowloon Walled City Park Tour

 

To learn about the past and present life of Kowloon Walled City. Take students on a slow walk through the former Kowloon Walled City (now Kowloon Walled City Park) to recognize the role of sustainable concepts in the redevelopment of the old district. Students will be able to reflect on the heritage of the past. The program includes:

 

  • Follow the guides to observe the buildings and their original features, and learn about the differences between the Walled City culture and the cash society;
  • Encourage students to ask questions at any time, and learn about the importance of sustainable development in community redevelopment through interactions with the guides.

 

Maximium partcipants: 30 pax

Duration: 2-3 hours

 

C. Other Activities

 

(1) Teacher Training Program for Sustainable Classrooms

 

Teacher training is intended to be interactive and sharing with teachers on how to incorporate the concepts of fair trade/sustainability into education through workshops/outside activities. The training will cover the following topics:

 

(i) Localization of Fair Trade

(ii) Fair Trade and Sustainability Concepts

 

We expect to be able to:

 

  • Share Fair Trade-related teaching resources;
  • Provide teaching guidelines to help teachers integrate Fair Trade and sustainability concepts in the classroom;
  • Help teachers design their classrooms through co-creation workshops.

 

(2) Fair Trade School Award Scheme

 

"The Fair Trade Schools Program has been implemented in a number of countries. The program encourages schools to promote Fair Trade in the school and community, such as activity planning, policy development, sale and use of Fair Trade products.

 

We have launched Hong Kong's first “Fair Trade Schools” award scheme, which combines secondary school curriculum and extra-curricular activities to enable all teachers, students and parents to learn about Fair Trade and practice global citizenship in the community.

During the period of 2015-2022, 30 schools will participate in the scheme and have been awarded as Fair Trade School in recognition of their teachers and students who have continued to organize activities to promote the concept of Fair Trade in their schools and communities during the scheme period.

 

A Fair Trade Working Group will be set up in the school for one year, which will gradually lead students from understanding to practicing Fair Trade through three levels of learning, namely cognitive, social-emotional and behavioral learning. Activities include student training workshops, seminars, internships, Fair Trade classes, student-led activities, questionnaire surveys, student bazaars, and so on.

 

Through the training of relevant concepts and skills, we hope to enhance students' knowledge and skills, sense of community belonging and civic responsibility.

To support teachers incorporating Fair Trade education in schools, we would provide display boards rental service and leaftlets for promotional purpose.

 

 


(1)Fair Trade Easypull Banner

 

We can rent Fair Trade display racks (easy-mount frames) for schools to display in their campus to help them promote Fair Trade. The content of the displays include:

 

  • introduction of Fair Trade concepts, producers' voices, etc.;
  • schools can choose the date and duration of the display according to the campus weekly meeting, semester or course theme.

(2)Fair Trade Leaflets

 

Fair Trade pamphlets can be used as supplementary teaching materials to help students learn more about Fair Trade.

 

  • Schools can place the pamphlets in the school for teachers and students to read;
  • The pamphlets include Fair Trade concepts, introduction of Fair Trade labels and so on.

( 3 ) Fair Trade Corner

 

The Fair Trade Corner is themed on Fair Trade products and information and consists of poster boards and Fair Trade product display areas. Through the display of Fair Trade products, teachers and students can: 

 

  • learn about Fair Trade concepts and labels;
  • schools can choose the date and duration of the display area or the poster boards according to the theme of the campus.
